Your route

Melbourne → South Gippsland → Lakes Entrance → Bright → Beechworth → Bendigo → Ballarat → Melbourne

Suggested pacing, not a fixed tour. Check current roads, weather, permits and campsite access, book sites that fit your vehicle and follow your agreed hire conditions.

Day 1–3

South Gippsland

Begin with countryside and a settled campsite base. Explore a coastal section or a gentle walking route, leaving a full day with little driving.

Before you go: Check park access and campsite bookings before adding a national-park visit.

Day 4–6

Gippsland Lakes

Travel towards the lakes and spend a few days near water. Mix a waterside walk with local food stops and a quiet afternoon beside the van.

Before you go: Choose designated camping and check water and disposal facilities.

Day 7–10

Bright and the valleys

Take a staged inland drive and base yourself around Bright. Leave time for riverside paths, village stops and a riding day on a suitable trail section.

Before you go: Use an approved route and check seasonal conditions; avoid treating mountain roads as a shortcut.

Day 11–13

Beechworth and surrounds

Move to a country-town base for heritage streets, produce stops and another day without packing up. Give everyone a say in the day’s activity.

Before you go: Book a site outside tight town-centre streets if access is easier.

Day 14–16

Bendigo and the goldfields

Head west in manageable stages. Explore town attractions on foot and leave one afternoon for the campsite rather than making every day a driving day.

Before you go: Confirm attraction opening and bookings close to travel.

Day 17–19

Ballarat and nearby country

Use a comfortable base for local history, a lake walk and a produce stop. Adjust the pace if you want a longer stay in a favourite town.

Before you go: Keep an indoor option for wet weather.

Day 20–21

Return via an easy last stop

Finish close enough to Melbourne for a calm return day. Reorganise your belongings, prepare the vehicle and make the final handover unhurried.

Before you go: Allow time for fuel and permitted waste disposal.

Make the route yours.
